What is Macular Degeneration?

Age-related macular degeneration (also known as macular degeneration, AMD or ARMD) is a term that refers to a group of disorders that affect the central portion of the retina, known as the macula. The macula has special structural features that allow images focused on it to be seen with high resolution. However, when the macula is damaged, this ability is greatly affected— resulting in a significant loss of central vision.

The 2 types of Macular Degeneration

There are two types of macular degeneration: “dry” and “wet.” Around 85% to 90% of the AMD cases belong to the “dry” group, whereas 10-15% belong to the “wet” group. Those with the wet form of AMD tend to experience the most severe form of vision loss.

Dry Form

Dry form. This is characterized by the presence of yellow deposits, known as drusen, in the macula. As they grow in size and number, they lead to a dimming or vision distortion — most noticeable when reading. In the more advanced stages of dry AMD, the light-sensitive layer of cells in the macula thins out, leading to atrophy (or tissue death). This may result in blind spots, or in the most advanced stages — central vision loss.

Wet Form

Wet form. The “wet” form of macular degeneration is characterized by the growth of abnormal blood vessels underneath the macula. These blood vessels leak blood and fluid into the retina, causing distorted vision, making straight lines look wavy, and can result in blind spots. These abnormal blood vessels eventually form a scar, which can lead to permanent central vision loss.
