AcrySof IOL

What Is an AcrySof IQ IOL?

The AcrySof IQ is an intraocular lens (IOL) that replaces your eye’s natural lens during cataract surgery. This toric lens allows for the curvature of an irregularly-shaped cornea to correct astigmatism. The AcrySof IQ is FDA-approved and may eliminate the need for LASIK surgery or glasses after cataract surgery. It can also sharpen near and distance vision.

Who Is AcrySof IOL For?

Astigmatism is caused by an irregular curve in either the lens or the cornea. While a regular cornea is round like a basketball, in those with astigmatism the cornea is oval—much like a football.

The cornea’s irregular shape makes it impossible for light to properly focus on the retina, the light-sensitive surface at the back of the eye. This leads to blurry vision at all distances.

AcrySof is customized to accommodate a cornea with astigmatism, making it the perfect IOL for cataract patients who also have astigmatism.

How Does AcrySof IOL Work?

Cataracts tend to develop with age, making one’s vision cloudy or blurry. The only effective treatment for cataracts is surgery, during which the eye surgeon removes the cloudy natural lens and replaces it with a new, clear intraocular lens.

During cataract surgery, your eye surgeon will replace the cloudy crystalline lens of your eye with an AcrySof IQ lens. Specifically designed to correct the vision of unusually shaped corneas, the lens is able to focus light directly on the retina. The result is clear vision and a significantly reduced need for glasses and contacts.
