What is LASIK?

LASIK is a type of refractive eye surgery that uses lasers to correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. These refractive errors occur when light entering the eye can’t focus directly onto the retina, at the back of the eye.

The name LASIK stands for “laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis.” In simple terms, it means that a laser is used to reshape the cornea, the clear, dome-shaped structure at the front of the eye.

How Does LASIK Work?

Before the surgery, your eye surgeon will administer numbing drops so you’ll be pain-free and comfortable throughout the procedure.

Then your eye surgeon will use a cutting laser to create a precise flap in the epithelium, the front layer of your cornea. After creating and lifting the flap, your eye surgeon will use a laser to remove a precise amount of tissue to create an evenly shaped cornea that can now accurately focus light onto the retina.

The flap is then put back in place, allowing the eye to quickly heal over the next few days.

How Long Does LASIK Take?

The length of the procedure varies from patient to patient, depending on several factors. But the entire procedure usually takes between 5-10 minutes per eye.

How Long Is LASIK Recovery?

Immediately following LASIK eye surgery, you may experience any of the following:

  • Itchy eyes
  • Watery eyes
  • Burning eyes
  • Blurred vision
  • Some ocular pain or discomfort

In many cases, your vision will become clear either later that day or the next day, but some vision fluctuations are normal. It can take up to a few weeks for your vision to fully stabilize.

Youe eye surgeon will provide you with post-surgical instructions and medications to help reduce any pain and discomfort you may experience. You may have to wear a protective shield over your eyes at night until they heal.

We’ll ask you to come in for follow-up eye exams to monitor your progress and ensure that your recovery is on track.

At What Age Can You Get LASIK?

LASIK surgery is FDA-approved for individuals who are 18 years old and beyond. That said, patients should wait until their early- to mid-20s, once their optical prescription stabilizes.

How Long Does LASIK Last?

The effects of LASIK are permanent, but some degree of eyewear may be required in certain cases, especially over time. For example, you may end up needing reading glasses, as age-related farsightedness (presbyopia) sets in.

How Safe is LASIK?

LASIK eye surgery is very safe, with a low complication rate of less than 1%.

However, as with all surgical procedures, LASIK does carry certain risks. Your eye surgeon will discuss any risk factors with you before surgery to determine your eligibility.

Who Should Not Have LASIK Eye Surgery?

LASIK is not recommended for individuals under the age of 18.

Mothers who are pregnant or nursing may also want to postpone having LASIK, as hormonal changes can temporarily alter a woman’s eyesight and lens prescription.

Other people who may not be candidates for LASIK include those whose prescription is still changing, who aren’t in good overall health, who take certain prescription medications or have severe dry eye syndrome.
