Laser eye surgery is one of the most popular elective surgeries, and for good reason. It’s a safe, effective and permanent way to correct your vision and minimize the need to wear glasses or contact lenses.

LASIK is the most common type of laser eye surgery, but it’s not for everyone. For example, if your cornea is too thin or you have severe dry eye syndrome, you may be advised not to have LASIK.

PRK, LASEK and Epi-LASIK are all excellent alternatives to LASIK.

offers several types of laser eye surgeries, and we’ll be happy to help you choose the option that’s best for you.

PRK

PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) uses a laser to reshape the cornea so that light can be accurately refracted onto the retina, without needing eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Before the procedure, you’ll receive [anesthetic] eye drops so you won’t feel any pain during the surgery. Then your eye surgeon will place eyelid holders on each eye to prevent you from blinking.

Your surgeon will remove the top layer of epithelial cells from the front of your eye using a laser, alcohol, brush or blade. Then, with a laser, your surgeon will reshape the cornea using pulsing light, and finally place a bandage contact lens over the cornea to promote epithelial healing. The bandage contact lens will stay in place for a few days following surgery.

Your ophthalmologist will provide clear instructions on how to care for your eyes following the surgery. The recovery period is usually one week, but it can take several weeks to achieve optimal vision.

LASEK

The primary difference between LASIK and LASEK is in the corneal flap that’s created during the reshaping process. In LASEK eye surgery, the flap is significantly thinner than the one created in LASIK eye surgery.

This provides a more comfortable recovery, although it may take a bit longer to regain clear vision compared to LASIK surgery.

Epi-LASIK

Epi-LASIK is a modified version of LASIK, and is becoming more popular with specific patients because it preserves a larger number of the eye’s epithelial cells.

The difference between the 2 surgeries is that Epi-LASIK uses a mechanical device, not a laser, called a microkeratome.

The flap with Epi-LASIK is much thinner and may be more appropriate for patients with very thin corneas who wouldn’t otherwise be candidates for the conventional LASIK procedure.
