What Is Latisse?
Latisse is a treatment that makes eyelashes thicker, longer and more numerous. It was originally used as a treatment for glaucoma, and patients who used the medication, which was called bimatoprost or Lumigen, noticed a stimulation of eyelash growth. In 2008, the FDA approved the serum, now called Latisse, as a treatment to increase the number and volume of eyelashes.
How Is Latisse Used?
Latisse is dabbed onto the top row of eyelashes nightly with a one-time-use applicator. The serum is distributed to the lower lashes through blinking. After two months, the number of lashes will increase and they should be longer and thicker. After a few months your eye doctor may recommend cutting back applications somewhat. Be aware that completely discontinuing Latisse will cause your eyelashes to return to their original condition.
What Are Some Latisse Side Effects?
Although Latisse is safe to use, the following side effects may occur:
- Redness in the conjunctiva
- Darkened eyelids
- A brownish hue on the iris
- Itchy eyes
- Irregular hair growth around the eyes, especially if the serum leaked into that area
Who Should Use Latisse?
Almost anyone who wants to have thicker and more abundant eyelashes can use Latisse. Additionally, people whose eyelashes have fallen out due to alopecia, chemotherapy or illnesses may benefit from Latisse.
However, Latisse should not be used by:
- Glaucoma patients who are taking eye pressure-lowering medications
- People with eye irritations such as conjunctivitis or uveitis
- Those who suffer from eye allergies
- People who are pregnant or nursing
